Classical Homeopathy against chronic diseases

Homeopathy has been recognized and has had widespread application in great parts of the world for over 200 years. Hundreds of thousands of medical doctors are using homeopathy and in the EU more than 50 000 medical doctors and other practitioners within the public health system prescribes homeopathic medicine to more than 100 million people. It is a treatment without injurious side effects, is not addictive and is the fastest growing alternative treatment in the EU.

Here you will find information on the basis, practice and what to expect from Classical Homeopathy as a patient. It is a highly individualized treatment tailored precisely towards the individual condition.

Contrary to the conventional view, the organism gives out signs and symptoms in an orderly and, most often, complete way in accordance with its constitution in both minor complaints as well as serious conditions. These are discernible in its totality and instructive as to the way of homeopathic treatment. Diseases are fostered by the underlying predispositions and susceptibilities in addition to exiting causes.

Classical Homeopathy treats both susceptibility and disease simultaneously producing a lasting cure leaving the organism stronger on all levels than prior to treatment. This is the reason patients that have been successfully treated so frequently tells of its preventive impact by having fewer if any relapses of the condition, and that they ever since have remained well. Generally speaking and correctly practiced, it is the most potent treatment of chronic diseases yet developed.

Discover for yourself to what degree your organism can be lifted to a higher and self-sustained level of health conventional approaches with all is advances are unable to obtain and sustain.

“It is no proof of man’s undertaking to be able to confirm what he pleases; but to be able to discern that what is true is true, and what is false is false, this is the mark of character and intelligence.”

                                                                            Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 –1772)

Definition Of Health

“Health is freedom from pain in the physical body, a state of well being; freedom from passion on the emotional plane, resulting in a dynamic state of serenity and calm; and freedom from selfishness in the mental sphere, having as a result total unification with Truth.

It is obvious that such a state of health is an ideal and that nobody can possess it in its entirety; but the definition points to an ideal Model of Health toward which therapeutic treatments should aspire. The more a patient under treatment approaches this state, the healthier he becomes; and the more he moves away from it, the less healthy he becomes.”

                                                                              Prof. George Vithoulkas (1932- )

He  awarded the The Right Livelihood Award for Health, also called The Alternative Nobel Prize by the Swedish Parliament, Riksdagen, for his work to further scientific classical homeopathy and is the recipient of 9 honorary doctorates as well as numerous other honors.

The Origin

The father of medicine, Hippokrates (ca. 460 BC – 370 BC), the author of the Hippocratic oath, recognized the principle of ‘likes cures likes’ and Paracelsus (1493-1541), a pioneer in the development of medicine of his time, regarded likes cures likes the superior principle of healing.

But it was Dr. Samuel C. Hahnemann (1755 – 1843), one of Germany’s most respected medical doctors, chemist, pharmacist, author and translator of medical literature who came to investigate the principle in its many expressions through testing of the actions of the medical remedies and so came to develop homeopathy into an independent and complete system of healing.

Because of the strong side-effects of the medicine used at the time, which often were more harmful than the illness itself, he stopped his practice as a medical doctor but continued to write and to translate medical works while seeking to understand the origin and development of disease and how to obtain self-sustained cures.

He was not satisfied with the present explanation of why Peruvian bark could cure cases of malaria, it was said it was due to its bitter taste, and started taking it himself just to discover that he developed symptoms like malaria. When he stopped the intakes, the symptoms soon disappeared.

He studied all available medical records and discovered that only in those very few cases where, after chronically sick persons contracted similar acute diseases, did spontaneous and lasting cures take place. In all other instances, where the acutes were dissimilar to the chronic condition, the chronic disease returned full force after the dissimilar acute disease had run it’s course.

He concluded that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy individual, cures the same in a sick person; Simila Similibus Curentur, likes cures likes, which became the first basis of homeopathy;
But the side-effects were still too strong, and he started diluting the medicine until all side-effects subsided. But so did also the curative quality. He then came upon the idea, maybe through his knowledge of chemistry, to gradually dilute and succuss the substance and discovered that while the side-effects disappeared the medical effects were actually both increased and refined through what he now called potentiation, which became the second basis of homeopathy; the minimal dose.

Together with a group of doctors he started trying out the different medical substances by taking them themselves and by recording all symptoms created in every minute detail. The testing of the remedies on healthy and sensitive persons is the third basis of homeopathy and differs from the testing of conventional drugs where animals are used for this purpose. Animals can never express the finer symptoms induced in such trials. He called it provings, and after six years he in 1810 published it all in Materia Medica Pura and started the practice of Homeopathy, named by Hahnemann himself. (How proving of remedies are conducted is beyond the scope of this page). The same year he also published Organon, the art of healing where in 294 aphorisms he describes the theory and practice of homeopathy.
Homeopathy is derived from the Greek words ’omoios’, which means ‘like’, and ’pathos’ which means ’illness’ and together means likes cure likes.

“Hahnemann introduced an entirely novel and scientific
method of studying drug-action. He demonstrated the effect of
drugs on the living human being. Surely a method far superior
to the study of their toxic effect on animals!
Even if drugs did affect animals in precisely the same way
that they affected all other animals and humans, which is not
the case – what animal could initiate us into the suicidal
impulses of Aurum, or the terror of death of Aconite?”
“Homeopathic remedies do not act directly on disease; they merely stimulate the vital reactions of the patient, and this causes him to cure himself.”
~Sir John Weir, GCVO & Chain CMG MD (1879–1971),
Physician to George V, Edward VIII, George VI Elizabeth II
King Haakon VII (1872–1957) of Norway, whose wife
Maud(1869–1938) was the youngest daughter of
                           King Edward VII  (1841–1910).

To more easily find relevant remedies in the meetings with patients the first Repertoire was created by Dr. James Tyler Kent, the most eminent homeopath at the end of the 19. century, by the systematic listing of remedies under ‘Mind’, ‘Generals’ and symptoms under the different areas and organ systems of the body. It soon became an indispensable tool in daily practice.

During the 19th century the practice of homeopathy grew both in Europe and the U.S.A. The results of the treatment in both the somatic- and the psychiatric homeopathic hospitals far surpassed the results of the conventional hospitals.
Particularly the impressive results in the treatment of epidemics including cholera, typhoid and yellow fever where death rates of those treated with homeopathy were dramatically lower than those conventionally treated, got much attention and expanded greatly its use.

But for different reasons the practice decreased at the beginning of the 20th century even if it retained its position in India where Mahatma Gandhi became one of its proponents and where the education is still close to equivalent to conventional medical education.

The Renewal

Large parts of the population in different countries of Europe have continued using homeopathy as the preferred treatment and about 22 % of the EU population are using homeopathic remedies. 60 % of the Scottish doctors prescribe homeopathic remedies to their patients. 45 000 Medical Doctors in the European Union have taken education and training in Homeopathy, many more doctors practice without any such background. But also among them has the complexity of its application combined with insufficient teachings and lack of qualified training limited its results.

Besides absurd ideas have developed, like “dream-provings” of remedies, by using moonlight as a source of a homeopathic remedy, or, by writing the name and potency of a remedy on a piece of paper, then put a glass of water over it and, by miracle; the water is potentized to the name and number written on the paper. Ideas like these are absolutely unfounded in the theory of homeopathy, have corrupted its practice and contributed to its loss of reputation.

But over the last decades there has been a revitalization and resurgence of homeopathy, much due to the committed work of Prof. George Vithoulkas ( 1932 – ), Greece. (see EDUCATION / LITERATURE) and International Academy of Classical Homeopathy.

Through his adherence to and practice of the natural laws of healing discovered and formulated by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, his thorough knowledge of Materia Medica coupled with a most profound understanding of human nature he has brought homeopathy forward to a most practicable treatment for our time.
He earned worldwide recognition through six decades of consistently successful treatment of complex and serious cases where conventional medicine had failed, and is recognized and respected worldwide as the preeminent homeopath of our time.

Classical Homeopathy is an extremely complex subject to master, especially the fact that only one remedy is correct and will lead to progress at any stage during treatment, hence the basis of the analysis determines its outcome. His insight and understanding of the process of cure and knowledge of the different remedies has given better foundations for evaluating the different cases and selecting the right remedy at the right time.

By taking part in the development of computer programs, as well as E-learning, which simplifies the use of his and other homeopathic masters compounded knowledge, he has made the work of doctors and other practitioners considerably easier, improved substantially their results and given homeopathy a superior potential for our time.

For many years he was leading a large homeopathic center of medical doctors in Athens, Greece. He has worked with authorities of the European Union to improve the standard of teaching to again give homeopathy its rightful and natural place at the universities. In addition to his many lecture tours and books, he has written numerous articles for major international medical publications.

The Swedish Parliament, Riksdagen, awarded him
The Right Livelihood Award for Health, also called
The Alternative Nobel Prize in 1996.

Later he is also the recipient of nine
Honorary doctorates from medical universities.

Why Homeopathy

Classical homeopathy sees the organism as A DYNAMIC WHOLE that creates symptoms in the face of mental and physical stress. It may for instance be grief after the loss of close people or microbes against which immunity has not already been developed. There are natural attempts to overcome or, if that proves impossible, to maintain a state of equilibrium as a defense against affecting deeper levels of functioning or organs. They must not be suppressed but are signals that together provide precise and decisive information about what is needed, what homeopathic remedy is needed to reverse the development and initiate a healing process. Chronic recurrent disorders are treated in the same way so that the ailments can be permanently cured and thus a downward spiral ends.

The natural immune response and the ability to cope with stress varies greatly from person to person depending on the congenital, acquired or weakened resilience and not least how previous illness has been treated. In particular, repeated suppression of acute febrile conditions and frequent repeated courses of antibiotics early in life present a risk of impaired health with a tendency to later develop chronic diseases in line with one’s disposition. A relatively long and detailed consultation is usually necessary to get the most complete picture of the condition possible in order to find the one remedy that stimulates the organism towards self-healing. Properly chosen remedy (other homeopathic remedies do little or nothing) provides precisely the stimuli the organism needs to reverse the development. It always works with the organism, never against it. It is strengthened and empowered to overcome the condition at all levels in contrast to conventional treatment where symptoms are suppressed individually with the side effects and long-term consequences it may entail. Many elderly people often suffer from several chronic diseases simultaneously that were never cured and are prescribed large amounts of conventional medicines for complex conditions where diseases and side effects can be difficult to distinguish and with serious consequences for prognosis and quality of life.

Is this inevitable, natural, as it should be and a situation we accept for ourselves?

The insidious consistent growth of everything from dementia to autoimmune diseases affects the vast majority of families. Cancer was previously very rare, but with increasing frequency President Richard Nixon started the ‘War on Cancer’ in the 1960s. Despite the enormous resources that have been and still are used and the constant medical advances we hear about almost daily, it has become the most deadly disease in the west. Nothing affects the complex immune system more than conventional medicines and vaccines, often exactly what they are focused on.

When, in our time so much attention is given to the understanding of ecological processes, how can we to the present degree let ourselves be users of chemical drugs without serious consideration of alternatives that supports and enhances the functioning of the whole of man?

Homeopathic treatment is non-invasive and without harmful side effects. Both pregnant women and newborns are treated. The life force, a not directly measurable quality, but which nevertheless is the source of the functioning of the organism as a dynamic whole as we are more than a collection of individual parts, is stimulated. We can all see the fundamental difference in energy that is reflected in the whole organism’s vitality between a child and an old person, and also experience how our own energy level changes over time and is affected by different types of stress. This inner power of healing, which seeks at all times to keep the organism in balance, this vitality is strengthened to a degree conventional treatment with all its progress is unable to obtain. The earlier the treatment starts, the better the prognosis. No pathological changes are necessary as we also take into account other symptoms that are not directly related to the condition but which together can still provide sufficient information to find the correct remedy. Not only will the disease itself go towards healing, also other symptoms and ailments will gradually get better or disappear completely. Homeopathy is not a form of herbal or mineral therapy but is more akin to classical acupuncture. The raw substances homeopathic remedies are developed from have very limited, if any, therapeutic effect. It is through the manufacturing process that the specific properties are refined and given the ability to strengthen organisms with similar symptom pictures the remedies are known to cure. They are manufactured by pharmaceutical companies through old standardized procedures and, unlike conventional medicines, have been tested on healthy people to bring out their healing properties at all levels of the organism. It may seem, with the long initial consultation, as an impractical and time-consuming treatment unsuitable for today’s needs. But the opposite is the case. As the whole person is treated and strengthened where even the minor symptoms are weakened or disappear completely, there is no need for frequent new interventions or treatments. The need for consultations and new investigations is dramatically reduced and yet, or precisely for that reason, the improvement can continue undisturbed. The remedies are very reasonable and the total cost of treatment is only a small fraction of the cost of conventional treatment.

What Is Treated

The correct remedy will in most cases effect a rapid cure of acute conditions and with less inclination for a relapse than by conventional treatment. In situations where two or more chronic diseases are present at the same time, like duodenal ulcer and anxiety, both will go towards a cure by the one correct remedy. In acute diseases a separate remedy may be needed before the chronic condition can be treated. If the treatment of a chronic disease starts early in its trajectory, a potential serious development might be averted.

The prognosis varies greatly and depends on how long the person has been ill, the persons age, the character of the condition and medical treatment received, but very roughly speaking one month of correct  treatment correspond to one year of endured disease.

Homeopathic treatment is holistic, which means all symptoms of the person are considered together yet with focus on the weakened area the actual disease describes.

The Consultation

To get a complete picture of the condition at hand, and to be able to give the indicated remedy, more than the medical history, diagnosis and knowledge of organs involved are required. Only one remedy will be curative at any stage of treatment. How the organism normally functions and how it reacts to different kinds of stresses helps tell what kind of remedy will be able to fight the diseased condition.

That is why you might also get questions like;

  • are you more bothered by cold or hot temperatures?
  • do you stick your feet out under the cover to cool them off during the night?
  • are you very emotional and cry easily?
  • do you like or do you have an aversion to the white fat on meat?
  • can you tolerate well staying in the sun or does it easily bring on an headache or other symptoms?
  • have you been through deep grief that may have had a long term impact?
  • is sleeplessness a problem?
  • or migraine?
  • are you averse to sympathy by others than those intimately close to you?
  • are you very concerned about your health?
  • are you very orderly?
  • do you desire salty foods?
  • do you react with some kind of fear when receiving injections or taking blood-tests?
  • do you have the tendency to perspire profusely e.g. during sleep or on your feet?
  • are you easily constipated, is that case in what kind of situations?
  • do you easily put on weight or is that not a tendency?
  • do you perspire on your neck during sleep?
  • do you have fear of heights?
  • are you afraid of spiders, mice or rats?
  • are you particularly fond of sweets?
  • are you easily weeping, depressed or irritable before menses?
  • do you have leucorreah?
  • do you have involuntary urination, like when coughing or jumping?
  • do you sometimes have herpetic eruptions?
  • if any eruptions? do they itch?
  • do you like milk?
  • do you have restless sleep?
  • do you grind your teeth during sleep?’

… these give an idea of the general and individualizing information needed to find the indicated remedy. It may seem strange that such apparently insignificant information can be of of any interest or consequence, but this completes the highly individualized picture of symptoms, making the identification of the curative remedy possible.

The organism does not give out symptoms in a haphazardly and randomized way, but rather coherently dependent on the basic constitution, discernible by the well educated experienced practitioner.

All such symptoms and complaints are subject to improvement or change or might disappear altogether during the course of the treatment, which adds evidence to how the constitution is strengthened on all its levels, while at the same time degrees of predispositions to diseases are lowered, and a greater sense of well-being and freedom on all levels of being are the results.

Not infrequently the same remedy was indicated years earlier and had it be given then the present condition may have been averted.

There may be pauses whilst the homeopath looks through his books or uses the computer. Even the most experienced homeopath cannot know all the information contained in Materia Medica or in the Repertoire, our two most important sources of information.

The first consultation in a chronic case usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours, sometimes longer, depending on the overall condition and age of the patient. After the consultation the homeopath may need more time to study the case and compare it with the known features of the remedies before one is given.
Later, when the treatment is well under way, usually only a few and far between follow-ups are needed. The frequency will be individually set depending on the condition of the patient.

Reactions And Improvement

In most chronic cases usually one single doses of the remedy is given and, while keeping some contact with the patient, let the long term curative action evolve without undue interference.
Most of the time the first reactions appear within 12 to 48 hours after intake with a mild aggravation that may lasts a week or longer depending on the initial condition. Some weakness, some headache, the itching of eruptions and more excretions of bodily fluids than usual are most common and should as much as possible be left undisturbed.

These aggravations where the organism is given power to start fighting the condition are not side effects, are harmless, usually mild and, unless strong medications have been used over time or too strong potency of the remedy is given, only transient discomforts relative to the inherent promise of the treatment. In an acute condition the correct remedy will rapidly decrease the intensity of acute symptoms and move the case towards a cure.

In chronic cases the following weeks most patients experience a initial and slowly augmenting general relief with a heightened sense of well being, increased energy and vitality as have not been felt in a very long time extending beyond the amelioration of the main complaint.
Symptoms such as improved quality of sleep, lowered stress level with a sense of inner calm are signs that the organism is in a more balanced state and has started counteracting the more severe aspects of the condition and are all reactions to the initial dose.

Yet, to further the progress, a repetition or a new remedy is eventually needed for most patients, but the time-frame is highly individual. During the evolving process of cure some old symptoms in a milder form will return in the reverse order of how they originally appeared before permanently removed, requiring the most judicious observation and care by the practitioner.

Some patients, usually those who are dependent on conventional medical drugs and/or due to the nature of the pathology, might by prescribed the remedy daily in low ‘potencies’, which means low strength. As the condition improves and the medical drugs are reduced or discontinued, single doses in a higher potency might be given.

Occasionally there is no initial reaction and only when examining the condition some months later one will see the complaints are less while strength and vitality have increased.
In incurable cases palliation and increased quality of life is the objective of the treatment.

In acute cases a relief is expected shortly after the intake or a few hours at most. Frequent repetitions of the remedy might be needed before a complete cure ensues.

The prognosis varies much depending on the pathology and the condition at the outset and treatments undergone. Roughly speaking one month of treatment corresponds to one year of disease, but some conditions may require mush less time while others more.

Obstacles To Cure

Without identifying and giving the correct remedy, there is no fundamental improvement. There are about 800 to choose from, and even if about 100 cover about 80% of the cases, this is the most challenging task for the prescriber.

While the principles of homeopathy are easy to understand, the application with evaluations of the patient over time, and deciding when to repeat or give new remedies is extremely complex and demanding.

To become a skilled practitioner takes years of training after completing the formal education, together as long as or longer than a regular medical study. Even so making the right choice is not inevitable and only the reaction of the patient will tell if it has been given. If not, the homeopath will need to reconsider the case and find a new remedy.

All kinds of chemical drugs limit the ability of the organism to respond, and are not easily compatible with effective homeopathic treatment. By altering the nature of the symptoms, identifying the right remedy also becomes more difficult and the road towards cure will be longer and more demanding both for the patient and prescriber. Also ointments containing strong medications like cortisone are suppressive and ought to be reduced or discontinued altogether if the condition allows.

Injections of vaccines and of anesthetics during dental work frequently cause some degree of relapse of the condition.
Daily use of coffee, which of course has less influence than medical drugs, has a stimulating effect which also limits the long term action of the remedy, especially when taken as a single dose, and over time can bring a relapse and is, for that reason, discouraged. Caffeine free coffee, moderate amounts of tea and alcohol however, has no influence on the treatment.
Serious mental/emotional upheavals or strains might also lead to a degree of relapse of the condition.
The lifestyles of some patients are so detrimental to their health that they are advised to make some changes to gain full benefit from the treatment. But mostly no changes are needed but with more initiative and energy this may be a consequence for some patients.

Education and Literature

The International Academy of Classical Homeopathy, founded and developed by Director Prof. George Vithoulkas (see RENEWAL), the most renowned homeopath of our time, into the leading school of homeopathy, firmly rooted in the Hahnmannian tradition. It is situated at the Greek island of Alonnissos and with branches in major cities across the globe.

It’s comprehensive and unique E-learning program sets a new and higher standard of teaching. It includes a large variety of cases managed over time, giving education in the field at the highest academic level and is the very best preparation for proficient treatment of patients available.
